In April, the Independent reported:

Banking giant Barclays took an additional £300 million hit to cover payment protection insurance mis-selling claims today but unveiled a higher-than-expected rise in quarterly profits.

The bank has now set aside £1.3 billion to deal with PPI compensation after a recent increase in the number of claims, which have eaten into the profits of its UK arm.

In addition, the guardian reported:

Barclays has announced it will compensate all customers who complained they had been mis-sold payment protection insurance (PPI) before 20 April on a “no questions asked” basis.

The payments, which the bank says are intended as a “gesture of goodwill”, will comprise all premiums paid plus any added interest.

Which is great news for all those who feel that they have a claim against their PPI on Barclays products such as:

Loans

Credit Cards

Mortgages

Over draft

Barclays powered store card

Should I use a Claims management Company?

In a nut shell, it isn’t advisable to use one, unless you are absolutely certain you can’t follow a few steps to get the claim in place yourself. (see our How to Claim PPI from Barclays guide below)

In fact, Barclays own website states:

Contrary to any advice or information you may receive from CMCs, we make no distinction at all between complaints made via a CMC and complaints you make directly.

Essentially you could be giving away as much as a quarter of your potential claim to a company making the claim on your behalf.

How to Claim PPI from Barclays

It seems that there are a number of scams that are taking place in the UK by companies pretending to be a personal loan lender and offering small loans to businesses. For example, one common telephone number reported is:

01614080830 (see a Who Calls me report on that number)

It seems that they are asking for Payment Protection Insurance deposits BEFORE they give you a loan.

If that happens to you, please be aware!

PPI is never compulsory, and should only be an optional product. If you are told you cant get a loan without PPI, then that is mis-selling.

You should never pay for PPI or any other loan fees until and unless you have seen some paperwork. If you do get paper work, check the companies background. WARNING: Some scammers are giving legitimate company names when carrying out this scam. Google the company and call them on their official 0800 number to verify they are real.

You should never have to pay for any fees upfront when taking out a personal loan.

Please be careful when paying for PPI – always remember – it should be your choice, and your choice only to take Payment protection Insurance.

If in any doubt, contact the financial Ombudsman. For Spam contact about PPI claims or loans, contact the Information Commissioners Office.

Some of the Frequently Asked Questions are:

What is PPI?

PPI stands for personal protection insurance. This is supposed to pay your loan repayments for one year in case you got sick or you were unemployed and not able to do so (after you took out the insurance while in full pay and in met eligible critera).

Is all PPI cover bad?

Not all PPI covers are bad. However, this product has been grossly mis-sold by banks and other financial services to benefit themselves.

Why has PPI been so much mis-sold?

This is because most of the time the sales staff are under too much pressure to sell it that they resort to lies and half truths to coerce people to signing up for insurance.

Because the institutions they work for are trusted, many people usually fall for these lies.

How far back can I claim on PPI mis-selling?

There is no specific date for the claim because as far back as 2002 people were being warned about it. The services have just been improved in 2011 so one may go back as long as they can to claim as long as the claim is legitimate. See our Guide to Payment Protection Insurance Claims for more information.

Is there a deadline for placing my claim?

Usually there is no deadline but if you wait too long like more than six years after your bank account is closed it will be harder to get your records and to prove the legitimacy of your claim.

How much can I hope to claim?

Usually, the claims are about 15 to 30% of the bank balance. It is however not necessary to waste time calculating this because the lenders will usually do it for you and compensate.

However, you can easily work it out if you calculate your monthly loan payments.

Can I keep my PPI and still save money on it?

Yes, you can switch your cover for a cheaper one. If you get standalone cover you could save up to 70% on costs.

I need more help! Where can I get advice?

For further queries you can contact the financial ombudsman with the following numbers:

08000 234 5679 (0300 1239 123 from a mobile).

Unfortunately in this day and age when information is traded, many businesses get hold of peoples personal details such as mobile phone numbers and email addresses. Sadly PPI email spam is on the rise lately, and we hope the following guide may help you counter these emails that you may never have subscribed to.

Don’t reply to the emails. If you reply, you are likely going to be added to an “active user” database and there is no way of stopping them selling your information further.

Report the email as “spam” to your email provider. Chances are if enough people do so, your email provider may automatically start sending these in your spam folder.

Look for the “opt out” option in the email. It that exists, make sure you opt out, which may stop the same company targeting you over and over again.

If you opt out and still receive the spam, or if there isn’t an opt out (by law all email marketing messages should carry an opt out feature) report the companies to the Information Commissioner http://www.ico.gov.uk/ or fill in one of their complaints letters here http://www.ico.gov.uk/upload/documents/library/privacy_and_electronic/forms/pecr_complaints_form.doc if the sender is getting too abusive.

Getting your Payment Protection Insurance back shouldn’t be as hard as it seems. There are of course options, you could use a claim handler, but will have to in return give away a chunk of your claims.

In the next few steps, I would like to show you how to try and make your own claim, an try and answer some common questions that people have, as well as give you a few PPC Claims Letter Templates.

The Steps

With the simple cost of reading the instructions below, and a few stamps, you can get thousands of pounds in PPI claims and you can do this without the help of anyone else.

Once you are sure you are eligible, i.e., you have definitely go t some PPI Claims, then proceed to the steps below:

1. Check your Claim Legitimacy

First off check if you are eligible. Make sure your claim is legitimate by getting all the agreements and T’s & C’s and going carefully through them. This will save you from any embarrassments and wasted effort. Check if you had a bank loan and or other credit because this is where most PPI is claimed back from. After years of mis-selling credit, the banks have now been forced to look into and pay claims to the tune of several billions and you could be one of the few that may make some of your money back (with interest!).

Realistically, try and get the terms and conditions that were in use at the time you took out your PPI because they may have changed over time.

2. Check List to Validate Your Claim

Go through the PPI mis-selling checklist to ensure that you have a valid claim. There are several situations of the mis-selling and you will have a claim if you fall into one of these:

The salesperson did not make it clear that taking the insurance was an optional product and did not notify you there was going to be a cooling off period during which you could cancel.

There was a bit of coercion and making the decision to buy the insurance was forced or pressured.

They gave you a condition that if you did not fill the forms for insurance then you could not get the product or claimed getting PPI would help in your application.

The sales person implied or stated that it would be more expensive for you to finance the product, if you did not take the insurance.

They would not let you continue with applying if you did not sign the insurance papers and or verbally agree to the contract.

There are other instances that one should look at. For example:

You have been paying for insurance cover you never knew about

The earlier forms had pre-ticked boxes that you had to uncheck if you did not want the insurance cover. This is an unfair advantage to the bank since it meant you were paying for insurance cover you never knew about.

Mis-Informed about Cover

There are instances where your partner already had cover and you did not need additional protction, or the insurance cover you were sold is for a shorter period than the loan itself, or if your work or insurance already provided you with this kind of cover. More on Mis-Selling here.

Are unemployed or retired

If you are already unemployed and retired or you were at the time, then this means that this cover never applied to you and so you are not eligible to any compensations yet you paid for them. As such you qualify for a claim.

http://ppiclaimletter.co.uk/PPI/unemployed/

http://ppiclaimletter.co.uk/PPI/retired/

Were a Temporary worker, Part Time, Self Employed, or Contractor

Temporary workers arent covered by most policies – so you were paying for a redundant policy. http://ppiclaimletter.co.uk/PPI/self-employed/

http://ppiclaimletter.co.uk/PPI/work-part-time-only/

http://ppiclaimletter.co.uk/PPI/contractors/

http://ppiclaimletter.co.uk/PPI/temporary-worker/

3. Write Those Letters!

Write to your lender, in this case the bank you used to apply for the loan. This should be solved within a short time but if they decline do not worry. Use our free letter generators to get a free claim letter.

4. No Luck Reclaiming or Claim Rejected? Speak to your Ombudsman

This is only applicable if step three fails, write to the ombudsman and this will ensure you have better chances of recovering the loan. Contact the financial Ombudsman consumer helpline on 0300 123 9 123 for guidance on the procedure for complaining about payment protection insurance (PPI).

Dear Sir/Madam,

Ref: [Your PPI policy number]

I applied for a Loan with [Insert name of company] and was successfully issued a loan worth £XXX on [date]. As part of the Loan agreement, I was sold a payment protection policy. [If you have the name of the salesperson then insert here: “The Name of the Person who sold me the policy is XXXXX” The total payment for my premiums for the life of the policy is £XXX and the interest on those payments is £XXX. To date I have paid out £XXX in premiums and interest.

It is my belief that the policy was miss-sold, as under the terms of the policy, I would have no cover because I am a Temporary Worker. As a result, under your policy, I would receive no cover if I find myself unable to meet the Loan repayments.

At the time of the Loan being taken out, I was not made aware that due to my circumstances, I would receive no cover under the PPI policy. Had I been made aware of the situation, I would not have committed to the payment protection insurance as it would have been of no benefit to my situation.

(add any other extra information that you would like that may support your claim here)

It is my belief that companies selling Payment Protection Insurance have the responsibility of making sure that the customer gets a policy that is suitable to their needs. However, as I have pointed out, my circumstances deemed the policy irrelevant and superfluous to my needs as I am a Temporary Worker, and the policy would not cover me.

As a result of miss-selling the policy to me, I would like to terminate it immediately, and put in a claim for a full refund of the premiums made to date plus interest. This total comes up to: £xxx

I would appreciate a response and an investigation into the matter within 8 weeks allowed to you, after which, should I have not heard anything back, I shall be furthering the matter to the Financial Ombudsman

Yours Faithfully

Dear Sir/Madam,

Ref: [Your PPI policy number]

I applied for a Store Card with [Insert name of company] and was successfully issued a card worth £XXX on [date]. As part of the Store Card agreement, I was sold a payment protection policy.

As a result, under your policy, I would receive no cover if I find myself unable to meet the Store Card repayments.

At the time of the Store Card being taken out, I was not made aware that due to my circumstances, I would receive no cover under the PPI policy.
